Structures of the Santa Fe

After purchasing the 4 volumes of Kachina Press’ Santa Fe Standard Designs, I started to build my first structures. Although some good lasercut models exist on the market, there are still a lot of buildings that are not available in kit form. First I ordered copies of articles published in the Model Railroad Press that featured structures of the Santa Fe. Then using different materials like cardboard, wood and styrene to build my first depot, located in Protection, KS.

Line side structures

Due to the lack of lineside structures for my different Santa Fe projects and after several unsatisfying scratchbuilding attempts, I decided to draw the needed structures with my drafting program and gave the files to a local company that does laser cutting. This resulted in a couple of nice little structures.

In the meantime a couple of manufacturers also released lineside structures.

Depots

A friend (Jens Lasch) released the Santa Fe depot of Lamy, NM as it appeared until the 1930’s with the tower. A recent release shows the depot as it is today, without the tower.

This project inspired me to develop a model of the ATSF Santa Fe, NM depot. Both models are HO and are routed from styrene sheets. They assemble like most commercially available models.

My newest project are the different buildings around the depot in Santa Fe. Above is a model of Hutchinson Fruit Co. before adding the loading platform and painting.

A model of Nuckolls Packing has been cut and needs to be assembled. Pictures will follow, so keep watching. I will cut these models on a cnc-router.

Rolling Stock of the Santa Fe

I did a couple of kit conversions to make the models look more “Santa Fe” although I did not count the rivets. A “good-as-is” model and the general appearance from a normal viewing angle was my first goal.

I did a couple of modifications to the Athearn Cupola Caboose to represent the Santa Fe prototype (using a Model Railroader Magazine article from Andy Sperandeo)
